The VIP Legacy High Roller Chronicles
Chapter 1 — California, USA | May 2003. The first chapter in a memoir series from more than three decades of VIP hosting.
Chapter 1 – California, USA | May 2003
17 Days. 62 VIP Invitations. 31 Incredible People. The Journey That Changed My Career Forever — our first face-to-face relationship road show.
There are certain moments in life that shape your career forever.
For me, one of those moments began on 27 May 2003, when I boarded a flight from Johannesburg bound for California. I had absolutely no idea that the next 17 days would change the way I viewed VIP player relationships forever.
At the time, the United States was still open to many online gaming operators, and a significant portion of our VIP players came from America.
Having previously worked with high rollers at Akani Egoli Casino, Gold Reef City, and Sun International's Sun City Privé, I thought I understood VIP service.
But one question kept running through my mind...
"Would an American high roller be any different from a South African high roller?"
I had never been to the United States before, and everything about the trip excited me. The players, the culture, the restaurants, the cities — this was completely new territory.
Looking back today, I genuinely believe my colleague Lou and I were among the very first in the online gaming industry to bridge the gap between the virtual world and the real one. Instead of simply communicating with players by telephone or email, we wanted to meet them face-to-face, shake their hands, share a meal, and build genuine relationships.
That philosophy became the foundation of my entire career.
The Perfect Travel Partner
I wasn't travelling alone.
Joining me was my colleague Lou, an American who had previously worked for Steve Wynn at one of the world's most prestigious casino resorts.
Lou wasn't just another colleague. He was a Harvard MBA graduate, exceptionally talented, and someone who understood American hospitality and VIP service better than anyone I had met.
He meticulously organised the entire California road trip, introducing me to some of the finest restaurants, hotels, and venues across the state.
Looking back, I couldn't have asked for a better mentor on my first visit to America.
Seventeen Days Across California
Our journey started in San Francisco before making our way through Sacramento, San Mateo, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Long Beach, Riverside, and Beverly Hills.
This wasn't a holiday.
It was relationship building at the highest level.
Over those seventeen days we invited 62 VIP players to join us.
An incredible 30 accepted the invitation, and every evening was spent hosting VIP dinners at some of California's finest restaurants.
These weren't business meetings.
They were opportunities to get to know people, understand their lives, and build genuine friendships.
My First American High Roller
I still remember meeting my very first American VIP.
Within minutes, my nerves disappeared.
I realised something immediately.
American high rollers weren't intimidating at all.
They were warm, genuine, incredibly friendly, and welcoming.
In fact, many evenings it felt as though they were hosting us rather than us hosting them.
Their hospitality, generosity, and openness made a lasting impression on me.
That very first dinner completely changed my perception of what an American high roller would be like.
I quickly realised that regardless of nationality, the world's best VIP players all wanted exactly the same thing — to be treated with honesty, respect, and genuine care.
That lesson has stayed with me for more than 30 years.
More Than Gambling
People often imagine VIP hosting revolves around casinos.
It doesn't.
the casino is often the smallest part of the relationship.
The real magic happened around the dinner table.
Listening.
Learning.
Laughing.
Understanding people.
Those conversations created friendships that often lasted many years.
Lou's Introduction to American Food!
One of the highlights of every morning was breakfast.
Lou made it his mission to introduce me to all of his favourite American breakfasts, and I don't think I ever said no.
Pancakes became a daily event.
Not one or two...
Huge stacks of pancakes.
Then came the eggs.
The funny thing was there were so many pancakes that you almost couldn't find the eggs underneath!
Everything tasted incredible, and I decided I was going to try absolutely everything America had to offer.
I also learned something else very quickly...
Back then, you could almost judge the size of a meal by its price.
A $15 burger and chips wasn't just lunch...
It could probably have fed a family of four back home in South Africa!
Even a simple visit to the movies became an experience.
The soft drinks looked like 2.5-litre Cokes, and the popcorn came in buckets big enough to last a week.
Everything in America simply felt bigger.
Twenty-Two Pounds of Great Food!
There's one part of the trip Lou and I still laugh about today.
California's restaurants were exceptional.
Every evening introduced another outstanding meal, accompanied by fantastic Californian wines.
By the time we flew home...
We had each gained almost 10 kilograms (22 pounds)!
It was certainly worth every pound.
One Very Important Lesson
Although the trip was an incredible success, Lou and I learned something extremely valuable.
Our VIP dinners were simply too large.
At each dinner we would stand up, introduce ourselves, and give a short speech.
While everyone enjoyed the evenings, we realised we weren't spending enough quality time with every guest.
We wanted our events to become far more personal.
We wanted to sit with everyone individually.
Hear their stories.
Learn about their families.
Understand their businesses.
Listen to what they enjoyed, both inside and outside of gaming.
Those conversations were far more valuable than any speech we could ever give.
From that moment onwards, we deliberately organised smaller, more intimate dinners where meaningful conversations became the priority.
Looking back, that simple change became one of the biggest reasons our VIP relationships became so strong over the years.
The Journey Had Only Just Begun
California was only the beginning.
The success of that first road trip confirmed that meeting players in person created stronger, longer-lasting relationships than anything we could ever achieve through emails or telephone calls.
Only a few months later, in September 2003, our next VIP road trip took us through Georgia, USA, continuing what would become an incredible journey across America.
Over the following years I would travel through 42 U.S. states, meet thousands of VIP players, host more than 120 VIP events, and build friendships that still exist today.
Take a Trip Back to 2003
One of the things I'm most grateful for is that we captured many of these incredible moments on camera.
If you'd like to see where it all began, including photographs of some of the very first American VIP players I had the privilege of meeting, visit:

More Stories to Come...
This is just one chapter of an incredible journey.
Over the coming months, I'll be sharing many more stories from the places I visited, the unforgettable restaurants, the amazing people I met, and the experiences that shaped more than three decades in VIP gaming.
Some stories are funny.
Some are emotional.
Some taught me valuable business lessons.
But every single one reinforced the same belief...
VIP gaming has never been about casinos. It's always been about people.
At VIP Legacy Club, that philosophy remains exactly the same today.
Because while technology continues to evolve, one thing never changes...
People will always remember how you made them feel.
