Before I entered the online gaming world, I spent nine years in land-based casinos.
One of my responsibilities was slot promotions, and I quickly learned something very important:
Cash and cars always worked.
Players loved the excitement of earning tickets into a draw. In those days, qualifying was simple. If you played slots and hit a jackpot, received a hopper fill when the machine ran out of coins, or qualified through a special payout, you earned your place in the draw.
It created excitement on the casino floor.
It gave players something to chase.
Most importantly, it brought people together.
The Gold Reef City Lesson
Around 1998, I was part of a small team of five people tasked with helping establish Gold Reef City Casino in Johannesburg.
The temporary casino site was positioned close to Soweto and, during one of our planning meetings, I asked Solly and Abe Krok for a promotional budget of R350,000.
Solly looked at me and simply asked,
"For what?"
My answer was immediate.
"I want to give away a car."
Fortunately, Solly believed in the idea.
That promotion became one of the highlights of my land-based casino career. On the evening of the final draw, we filled the casino to capacity, with another 8,000 people waiting outside hoping to witness the excitement.
It proved something that stayed with me throughout my career.
People don't simply remember promotions.
They remember experiences.
Taking the Car Draw Online
When I entered the online gaming industry, I brought many land-based casino ideas with me.
One of those ideas was the live car draw.
Back in 2004, online casinos were still very much a virtual experience. Players deposited online, played online and spoke to VIP hosts over the phone.
Very few had ever met the people behind the casino.
I wanted to change that.
So, together with the team, we launched what became one of the first live VIP car draws connected to an online casino.
The grand prize?
A brand-new Ford F-150 Pickup Truck.
For anyone living in America, the Ford F-150 is more than just a vehicle.
It's an icon.
A symbol of freedom, reliability and American pride.
It was the perfect prize.
How Players Qualified
Players were informed about the promotion through traditional snail mail together with an email campaign that began two weeks before qualification started.
Players competed in five weekly promotions, followed by semi-finals, before the final eight couples earned their invitation.
Those finalists travelled from five different states to Orlando before boarding Sterling's Casino Cruises in Cape Canaveral for the live draw.
For many of them, this wasn't just another promotion.
It was the first time they would meet the VIP team — and each other — in person.
The First Real Live Draw
On Saturday, March 6, 2004, what I believe was one of the first real live VIP draws linked to an online casino finally became reality.
The players were no longer usernames on a computer screen.
They were sitting together.
Talking.
Laughing.
Sharing stories.
Making friendships.
Exactly as we had hoped.
We wanted every finalist to feel proud to be part of the Fortune Lounge Family.
Relationships Really Do Matter
One of my favourite memories from this promotion was seeing Debra and Dino win the Ford F-150.
The reason it meant so much to me was simple.
Lou and I had already met them during our California Road Show in 2003, where they attended one of our VIP dinners in Sacramento.
Almost a year later, here they were again.
This time standing beside their brand-new Ford F-150.
It reminded me of something I've believed ever since.
Relationships work — but they take time to grow.
Trust isn't built overnight.
It's built one conversation...
One dinner...
One event...
One experience at a time.
The People Behind the Scenes
Events like these never happen because of one person.
Another VIP who deserves special mention is Bob B.
Bob had also attended one of our previous roadshows and generously offered to help us organise the Ford F-150 for the event.
He arranged for the vehicle to be delivered to Cape Canaveral, organised the presentation, the décor and even arranged the personalised number plate for the occasion.
I'm currently searching through my archives for that photograph, and once I find it, I'll proudly add it to this chapter.
Looking back, it's another reminder that many of our VIP players became much more than customers.
They became friends.
Why This Event Mattered
Our objectives were very clear.
- Conduct a live draw in front of fellow VIP players.
- Celebrate the finalists publicly.
- Build confidence and pride in being part of the Fortune Lounge family.
- Strengthen long-term loyalty.
- Continue bridging the gap between online gaming and real-world experiences.
Looking back, this event represented another important milestone.
Players weren't simply account numbers anymore.
They belonged.
More Than a Promotion
Many casinos give away prizes.
Very few create memories.
The Ford F-150 was the headline attraction.
But the real prize was the experience itself.
Players travelled together.
Shared meals.
Built friendships.
Met the VIP team.
And became part of something much bigger than an online casino promotion.
That has always been my philosophy.
What We Learnt From Our VIP Players
One of the biggest advantages of hosting live events was the honest feedback we received directly from players.
Many of the ideas they shared in 2004 have become standard practice throughout the industry today.
Some of their recommendations included:
- Creating a dedicated Winners Page showcasing significant wins of $2,000 and above, categorised by slots, progressives, video poker and table games.
- Celebrating every progressive jackpot winner with an additional surprise bonus.
- Introducing a VIP points programme where players could redeem points for once-in-a-lifetime experiences instead of cash.
One player made a comment that has stayed with me for over twenty years:
"Players quickly forget free cash... but they'll never forget an incredible experience."
That single sentence helped shape many of the luxury experiences I would organise throughout my career.
Other suggestions included:
- Personally acknowledging large wins with congratulatory emails.
- Issuing loyalty rewards monthly instead of weekly to create a greater sense of occasion.
- Creating a true VIP-only high-stakes slots tournament with meaningful prize pools.
- Rewarding ultra-high rollers with unique long-term loyalty gifts such as luxury vehicles, similar to leading land-based casinos.
Looking back today, it's fascinating how many of these ideas eventually became reality across the gaming industry.
The Legacy of the Florida Car Draw
The Florida Car Draw became another milestone in my VIP journey.
It combined everything I had learnt in land-based casinos with the possibilities of online gaming.
- The excitement of a casino-floor promotion.
- The trust of a live draw.
- The power of personal relationships.
- The loyalty created through unforgettable shared experiences.
Most importantly, it proved something I still believe today.
Online gaming doesn't have to stay online.
When relationships come first, incredible experiences naturally follow.
More Stories to Come...
This was Chapter 4 of The VIP Legacy High Roller Chronicles.
From California roadshows and Florida car draws to African safaris, luxury cruises, golf tournaments and casino weekends, every event taught me something new.
After more than 30 years in VIP gaming, one lesson has remained constant.
VIP gaming has never been about casinos.
It has always been about people.
Relationships built over time.
And memories that last a lifetime.
