During my career, I've had the privilege of meeting thousands of VIP players from all over the world.
Some became clients.
Some became friends.
A few became unforgettable.
One of those people was Terrance Watanabe.
Many people know Terrance because of the headlines written about him over the years.
I remember him for a very different reason.
I remember his kindness, generosity, and the genuine relationship we built.
Three Months Before the First Conversation
Relationships don't always happen overnight.
In Terrance's case, it took patience.
For almost three months, I sent emails and made numerous telephone calls, almost always speaking with his personal assistants rather than with Terrance himself.
Eventually, one morning at approximately 3:00 a.m., my telephone rang.
Half asleep, I answered.
It was Terrance.
I remember the moment vividly.
The shock of being woken from a deep sleep quickly turned into excitement as we started talking.
That first conversation lasted far longer than I had expected.
In fact, many of our future phone calls would continue for several hours.
Looking back now, that wasn't unusual.
Real VIP relationships are built through conversation.
Not promotions.
Not bonuses.
Simply taking the time to get to know another person.
An Invitation I Never Expected
One weekend I happened to be in California meeting several wonderful VIP clients.
That evening we had dinner at Spago in Beverly Hills, one of Los Angeles' iconic restaurants.
After dinner, at around 10:00 p.m., I phoned Terrance to let him know I was nearby and had some time available the following day if he would like to meet.
I still remember his response.
"I'll send my jet."
I honestly thought he was joking.
He wasn't.
He instructed me to be at Van Nuys Airport sometime between midnight and 2:00 a.m.
I took a taxi to the airport.
When I arrived, one of the pilots walked over and asked,
"Are you Mr. Jörn?"
After checking my identification, we boarded the aircraft.
There were just two pilots and myself.
Within a short time we were airborne, heading towards Las Vegas.
Even today, I sometimes think back to that flight.
I remember wishing my family and close friends could have experienced that incredible moment with me.
It was something I'll never forget.
Meeting Terrance
After landing in Las Vegas, a limousine collected me from the airport and drove me to Bellagio.
I waited in the reception area.
Before I even saw him, I recognised his voice.
For some reason, I had imagined meeting a businessman dressed in an expensive suit and tie.
Instead, Terrance arrived wearing flip-flops, casual shorts and a relaxed smile.
It immediately reminded me that appearances often tell us very little about a person.
My very first impression wasn't the wealth.
It wasn't the reputation.
It was how incredibly friendly, approachable and polite he was.
An Evening I'll Never Forget
Terrance suggested we walk over to one of the slot machines.
He handed me a stack of $100 bills and smiled.
He said,
"As long as we're talking, just keep feeding the machine."
Every time I stopped inserting the notes because I became too involved in the conversation...
He stopped talking.
We both laughed.
That was Terrance's sense of humour.
The evening became about far more than gambling.
As we walked through Bellagio, Terrance introduced me to what felt like almost every cocktail waitress and bar hostess in the casino.
Every single person received a generous $100 tip.
It quickly became obvious how well everyone knew him.
We enjoyed countless Vodka Cranberries together that evening.
To this day, whenever I see one on a drinks menu, I immediately think back to Bellagio.
It remains one of the most enjoyable evenings I've ever experienced in the gaming industry.
Giving Back
One aspect of Terrance that impressed me enormously was his generosity away from the casino.
The company I worked for proudly supported Terrance's AIDS Foundation, and through that relationship my colleague Nick and I were invited to attend the Night of a Thousand Stars Gala, organised by the Nebraska AIDS Project.
The evening featured a live performance by KC and the Sunshine Band.
It was a wonderful event filled with laughter, music and people coming together for an important cause.
Moments like those reminded me that many successful people quietly support charities without seeking recognition.
A Visit to Omaha
Another wonderful memory was visiting Terrance at his home in Omaha, Nebraska.
He welcomed us with the same warmth and hospitality he always showed.
He proudly showed us around his home, introducing us to different parts of his life away from the casino.
At one point, he even handed us the keys to his Mercedes-Benz SLK, encouraging us to drive it in and out of the garage.
That level of trust said a great deal about the person he was.
During the visit we also met his sister.
She was absolutely delightful.
One funny coincidence that has always stayed with me was discovering that we shared the same birthday.
Sometimes it's the smallest memories that remain the strongest.
I still have photographs from those visits, including pictures with Terrance and the private jet that collected me from California.
Whenever I look at them, they remind me not of the casinos, but of the friendship.
What Terrance Taught Me
People often ask me what it's like to meet ultra-high rollers.
Many imagine extravagant lifestyles, endless gambling and luxury.
Of course, there is some truth in that.
But what I learnt from Terrance was something much more valuable.
Behind every VIP account is simply another human being.
Someone who enjoys conversation.
Someone who appreciates loyalty.
Someone who values honesty.
Someone who wants to be treated with respect.
Money never changes that.
Over the years, I've met thousands of successful people.
The ones I remember most are rarely the ones who spent the most.
They're the ones who made a lasting impression as people.
Terrance was certainly one of them.
The Legacy of a Relationship
Looking back today, I feel privileged to have known Terrance during that period of my career.
Our friendship reinforced something I have believed ever since.
VIP hospitality has very little to do with casinos.
It has everything to do with relationships.
The casinos provide the games.
People create the memories.
More than twenty years later, I still smile when I think about:
- The unexpected 3 a.m. telephone call
- Flying to Las Vegas on a private jet
- Walking through Bellagio together
- The generosity he showed to everyone around him
- The wonderful evening at the Night of a Thousand Stars Gala
- Visiting his home in Omaha
Those are the moments I remember.
Not because they were extravagant.
But because they were genuine.
