By 2004, our VIP events were evolving.

The roadshows through California, Florida and Georgia had shown us the value of meeting players face to face, but we wanted to take the experience one step further.

Rather than inviting players to dinner for a single evening, why not create an unforgettable holiday together?

That question led to one of the most memorable VIP experiences of my career.

From 4–12 February 2004, I had the privilege of hosting one of my largest Canadian VIP clients and his wife from Toronto on an exclusive eight-day South African adventure.

This wasn't simply another VIP event.

It was an opportunity to showcase my home country and create memories that would last a lifetime.

Welcome to Africa

For visitors travelling from Canada, Africa has always held a certain mystery.

The wildlife.

The landscapes.

The culture.

The history.

For my guests, this would be their very first African safari, and I was just as excited as they were.

Our first destination was the magnificent Polokwane Nature Reserve, where we stayed in five-star luxury surrounded by the African bush.

From the moment we arrived, every member of staff made us feel like family.

Service was exceptional.

The food was outstanding.

And every day brought another unforgettable adventure.

The Big Five

Like many visitors to Africa, there was one goal at the top of everyone's list.

To see the famous Big Five.

  • Elephant
  • Rhino
  • Lion
  • Cape Buffalo
  • Leopard

Every game drive was filled with anticipation.

You never quite knew what would appear around the next corner.

One morning it was a herd of elephants peacefully making their way across the reserve.

Later we found magnificent rhinos grazing just metres away.

Then came buffalo...

The lions...

And finally, the most elusive of them all...

The leopard.

Seeing all five animals in one trip was something incredibly special, and watching the excitement on my guests' faces reminded me why experiences like these are worth so much more than any VIP bonus.

Cape Town – One of the World's Great Cities

After the safari, we travelled south to one of my favourite cities in the world.

Cape Town.

Our base was the beautiful Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, where luxury hotels, world-class restaurants and spectacular views create one of South Africa's most iconic destinations.

Together we explored everything Cape Town had to offer.

The bustling waterfront.

Outstanding restaurants.

Table Mountain standing proudly over the city.

The vibrant atmosphere.

Every day offered something different.

For my Canadian guests, it was the perfect combination of African wildlife and cosmopolitan city life.

Creating Memories Beyond the casino

One thing became very clear during this trip.

VIP experiences don't have to revolve around gambling.

Yes, our guests enjoyed the casino.

But the conversations afterwards were about the safari.

The wildlife.

The scenery.

The restaurants.

The photographs.

The people they met.

Those became the memories they treasured most.

It reinforced something I had been learning since my first American roadshows.

The strongest VIP relationships are built through shared experiences.

One Important Lesson

Like every event before it, this journey taught me something valuable.

Our itinerary was simply too ambitious.

There was so much we wanted our guests to experience that we packed every day with activities.

Looking back, we realised they needed more time to simply relax.

To enjoy the lodge.

To sit quietly overlooking the African bush.

To have an unhurried breakfast.

To soak up the atmosphere without constantly moving on to the next destination.

From that trip onwards, we deliberately started building more free time into our VIP itineraries.

Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when nothing is planned.

A New Direction for VIP Experiences

This African safari marked another important milestone in my career.

It showed me that VIP hosting wasn't limited to dinners or casino events.

It could become something much bigger.

A journey.

An adventure.

An experience shared together.

Over the years that followed, these trips would evolve into luxury cruises, golf weekends, casino retreats, international roadshows and exclusive VIP experiences across the world.

Each one teaching me something new.

Each one strengthening relationships that continue to this day.

This was only Chapter 3.

There were still many more adventures waiting — more countries, more unforgettable destinations, and more incredible people who made this journey so rewarding.

The greatest jackpots aren't won on a slot machine. They're the friendships and memories you build along the way.
